Which Drone Does Your Shoot Actually Need?

Almost every production call I get includes some version of the same question: what drone are you bringing?

It's the wrong question, and it's usually asked too early.

The right question is what camera has to fly and what that footage has to cut with. Answer those two, and the aircraft picks itself. Answer them wrong, and you either pay for a heavy-lift package you didn't need, or you save four thousand dollars on a shoot day and discover in the edit that your aerials don't match your ground coverage.

I fly three tiers: a DJI Mavic 4 Pro, a DJI Inspire 3, and a Freefly Alta X carrying either a MōVI Pro or a Ronin 2. Here's how I actually decide and where the money really goes.

Start with the camera, not the drone.

The single most useful thing you can do before booking an aerial unit is look at what your A camera is.

If your ground package is a Komodo or a Venice and your aerials come off a small sensor with a fixed lens, a colorist will spend real time trying to marry them, and it will still read differently on a big screen. Not because one is bad, but because dynamic range, sensor size, and lens character don't match.

If your ground package is a mirrorless body and your deliverable is a two-minute web piece, that mismatch is invisible and you just saved thousands of dollars.

So: what has to cut with what. Everything else follows.

Tier 1 — Mavic 4 Pro

Where it belongs: real estate and resort marketing, tourism and destination pieces, corporate and brand social, event coverage, location scouting, B-roll and establishing shots for projects finishing on a mirrorless or documentary package.

The Mavic 4 Pro is a genuinely serious tool and I want to be clear about that, because "consumer drone" is used dismissively in this industry and it hasn't been accurate for years.

It carries a triple-camera system on a Type 4/3 platform: a 100MP main camera at 28mm shooting 6K up to 60fps or 4K up to 120fps, a 70mm medium tele at 48MP, and a 168mm tele at 50MP. All three shoot 10-bit D-Log. It has a redesigned gimbal with 360-degree roll rotation and up to 70 degrees of upward tilt, which opens up shots that used to require a specialty rig.

Rated flight time is 51 minutes on the 95Wh battery. In practice, in moderate wind, plan on something closer to 35. It weighs 1,063 grams, which matters more than people realize.

Why the weight matters. At just over a kilogram, this thing goes in a backpack. Small aircraft means smaller standoff distances, faster setup, less rotor wash, and far fewer objections from property owners and location managers. On a tight schedule with six locations in a day, the Mavic will out-produce a heavier rig simply because you can move.

Where it runs out: fixed lenses. A 4/3 sensor has real limits in high-contrast desert light and after dark. And it doesn't record RAW in a form that gives a colorist much room. If your project is finishing in a serious grade, you'll feel the ceiling.

Don't pay for more if: your deliverable is web, social, or MLS. A heavy-lift package for a real estate listing is theater.

Tier 2 — Inspire 3

Where it belongs: narrative and episodic, national and regional commercials, high-end resort and automotive, anything finishing in a real color pipeline.

This is the workhorse, and for the large majority of professional productions it is the correct answer. It is also, I'd argue, the most underestimated tool in the category. The Inspire 3 is flying on high-end commercial and feature work right now, and has been since 2023. If you've assumed it's a step below "real" cinema aerial, that assumption is a few years out of date.

The X9-8K Air is a full-frame gimbal camera with dual native ISO and 14+ stops of dynamic range, recording internally up to 8K/25 CinemaDNG or 8K/75 ProRes RAW. Full frame and RAW are the two things that let aerials genuinely intercut with a cinema ground package.

It takes full remote FIZ control. Your 1st AC pulls focus on the aerial the same way they pull it on the ground. This is the thing most people get wrong about this tier: remote focus is not the dividing line between the Inspire and heavy lift. The Inspire has it.

It also runs dual-operator, so I fly while a dedicated camera operator runs the gimbal. On any move where framing has to be precise while the aircraft is doing something complicated, that separation is the difference between a usable take and four attempts.

Two features that earn their keep on set:

RTK positioning with Repeatable Routes. The aircraft flies the identical path again, holding altitude, speed, gimbal angle, and camera settings. That's how you get the same pass three times for a VFX plate, a match cut, or a day-to-night transition.

3D Dolly. Simulates a crane, cablecam, or dolly move without the rigging day that any of those would normally cost you.

Realistic flight time with the X9 is under 30 minutes, so build the day around battery swaps.

The honest tradeoff: roughly 4kg, so bigger standoffs, more rotor wash, more setup, and a crew of two. It's not the tool for six locations in a day.

Don't pay for more if: you don't need a specific camera body in the air, and you don't need specific glass. That's a narrower set of jobs than most people assume.

Tier 3 — Alta X with MōVI Pro or Ronin 2

Where it belongs: when a specific cinema body has to fly, or when the DP needs the exact glass that's on the dolly.

Here's where I'll be more honest than most operators are, because the Inspire 3 section above already gave away the ending.

The gap between Tier 2 and Tier 3 is narrower than the price difference suggests. Both give you full frame. Both give you RAW. Both give you remote focus. Both give you a live downlink to video village. If you were expecting heavy lift to be the only tier with cinema-grade control, that hasn't been true for a while.

What heavy lift actually gets you comes down to two things.

Glass. The Inspire's DL mount is a good ecosystem, but it's a closed one. If your DP is shooting a specific set of primes on the ground, or anamorphic, or something with a particular character they've built the look around, the Inspire can't mount it. The Alta X with a MōVI Pro or a Ronin 2 underneath can fly what the ground unit is shooting. Same glass, same look, no conversation in the grade about why the aerials feel different.

A mandated body. Some productions specify one camera for the entire show, for VFX pipeline reasons, for studio delivery specs, or because the DP won't budge. If the answer is Alexa Mini LF or Venice Rialto, the Inspire is out of the conversation regardless of how good it is.

That's the honest list. If neither applies to your project, Tier 2 will very likely serve you better and cheaper.

The tradeoffs, and they're significant. Flight time runs around 25 minutes with a full package, versus the better part of an hour on a Mavic. Crew is two to three. Setup is measured in tens of minutes. Standoff distances are much larger, so the shot needs more room than you might have. And depending on payload, an aircraft in this class can exceed 55 pounds fully loaded, which puts it outside standard Part 107 and into FAA exemption territory. That's a question worth asking any operator who advertises heavy lift.

Don't pay for this if: you don't need specific glass or a specific body. This tier exists for matching, not for impressiveness.

A note on FPV, and why I don't fly it myself

FPV has become a real part of production over the last few years, and it deserves its own answer rather than being lumped in as a fourth tier. It isn't a tier. It's a shot type.

What it actually is. An FPV pilot flies manually through goggles, in a live first-person view, usually without GPS position hold and without obstacle avoidance. That's the point. It's what allows the continuous one-take move that conventional aerial can't do: through a window and down a stairwell, under a bridge, threading a gap, diving a building face, chasing a vehicle through terrain at speed.

What people don't expect. Image quality is usually a step down, not up. Most FPV builds fly an action camera or a lightweight body, and the ones that carry a real cinema camera are a specialized cinelifter class with their own constraints. Flight times are short, often a handful of minutes. There's no redundancy and no safety net, so the crash rate is meaningfully higher than conventional work. And under Part 107, flying through goggles requires a dedicated visual observer, so it's never a one-person job.

So book FPV when the move can't be done another way. Not because it's the current look. If a conventional drone can execute the shot, it will do it more safely, with better image quality, and in fewer takes.

Why I bring in a specialist. FPV is a genuinely different skill. It's manual stick work built over thousands of flights, and it doesn't transfer from conventional cinema aerial any more than being a good camera operator makes you a good Steadicam op. I'd rather be honest about that than claim it and hand you a mediocre version.

When a project calls for FPV, I bring in a dedicated FPV pilot and integrate them into the production the same way I integrate myself: briefed, insured, on the same permits, on the same downlink. You get one point of contact and one aerial unit, with the right person on the sticks for each shot.

If someone tells you they do everything, including FPV, ask how many hours they have in goggles.

Where the budget actually goes

The aircraft is rarely the expensive part. What drives cost is crew size, setup time, and shots per day.

  • A Mavic day is one operator, minimal setup, and a lot of ground covered.

  • An Inspire day is two people and a slower, more deliberate pace.

  • An Alta X day is two to three people, meaningful setup per position, and fewer setups overall.

So the real budget question isn't "which drone." It's how many aerial setups you need and how much room the schedule has for each one. A production that budgets for heavy lift and then schedules it like a Mavic day is going to have a bad afternoon.

Permits and airspace are their own line item and don't scale with aircraft size. Authorization near a controlled field takes the same lead time whether you're flying one kilogram or twenty.

The short version

  • Web, social, listings, tourism, scouting → Mavic 4 Pro

  • Commercial, narrative, anything in a real grade → Inspire 3. This covers more high-end work than most people expect.

  • Specific glass or a mandated camera body → Alta X

If you can't articulate why you need the third tier, you probably need the second one.

Three expensive mistakes I see

Booking heavy lift for a project finishing on the web. Money that would have bought three more locations.

Booking the small aircraft for a project finishing in a DI. The savings evaporate in post, and you can't reshoot the aerials.

Deciding the aircraft before locking the location. Airspace, terrain, and property access constrain what's flyable more than any spec sheet. I'd rather have a conversation about where you're shooting than about which drone you want.
